You can’t always get what you want

Website of the Week.

I found an old book in a second hand bookshop called The Art of Black and White Photography by  John Garrett. The book was first published in 1990, so of course it was film based, but it gave a fantastic insight into monochrome and many of the techniques are directly transferable to digital. Garrett does some great work and it can be seen on his website john-garrett.co.uk/.

This photo I took and developed by adopting and adapting ideas from Garrett’s book.

I bookmarked his site so I can spend some time looking later! I love the tones in your image, but what I love most is the dramatic contrast between dark and light

    • Ivor says:

Thank-you, Tammy. I was a bit bothered about the amount of dark at the bottom of the shot, but you can see on the full sized image that there is some detail retained of the hull’s ribs in there.

I haven’t read the book, but your B&W shot has a wide range of tonalities. Was that one of the lessons?

Really great black & white shot Ivor and thank you for bringing John Garrett to our attention!

😀 He’s a good photographer and very knowledgeable. I’m going to see if I can get his other books too. Glad you liked it.

    • Ivor says:

Thanks Louis. I was particularly pleased with the textures on the keel. There are lot more photos to be had from these up-turned boats!

Well done, I love the black blacks you obtained.
