Patterns in the sand

When the tide is out the retreating waters leave these patterns carved into the sand.

This is amazing. It looks like trees, carved by an artist rather than by the surf.

Thanks Julie, The sand here produces amazing patterns as the tidal water flows out. I always look for them when I am out walking on the beach. They look like forests to me too. I can never quite work out how they are formed with “branches” above and below. I guess they are like miniature river systems with tributaries at the top and an “delta” at the bottom.

I agree with Julie, Ivor, it looks like mangrove trees.

I don’t remember seeing patterns like this on other beaches. I wonder if it requires a particular consistency of sand. Thanks for visiting.

They are quite beautiful, next time I’m on a beach I’ll be looking out for some patterns too.

I was filling up my computer hard drive with pictures of these a couple of years ago. Shooting them in addictive. It would be interesting to know if they appear on other beaches around the world.
