Diving Eider

Eider dive for molluscs. They swallow mussels whole and break the shells in their gizzards. Please don’t feed them chips or bread, which can harm them and make their eggshells fragile and lead to physical deformities in the young. They will also get overweight from too many carbohydrates that have few other nutritional benefits. Fat birds can’t fly!

If you want to feed them then mealworms are consumed with relish, and they float. Eider will also eat a little lettuce, which is similar to some of the weeds that they pull from the sea bed. Seeds, sweetcorn, grape halves and peas that are good food for other ducks are not so great for the eider because they sink too quickly.
