Northumberland Photography Workshops
Explore, Learn and Create

Enjoy photography. Learn something new. Come home with better pictures.
There’s something special about being in the right place when the light suddenly becomes beautiful. Perhaps it’s the first sunlight falling across a Northumberland beach, a flock of wading birds feeding beside the incoming tide, or a castle silhouetted against the colours of the evening sky.
My standalone Northumberland photography workshops help you bridge the gap between seeing a good photograph and knowing how to capture it.
Scroll to find dates and book a spot in my scheduled workshops.

Each practical workshop concentrates on a particular photographic subject or technique. You’ll learn how to plan your photographs, make creative decisions, use your camera more confidently and recognise photographic opportunities that you might previously have overlooked.
You won’t spend the session listening to a lecture. You’ll be out with your camera, taking photographs, experimenting and getting individual help when you need it.

Sunrise Photography – The First Light of Day
Saturday 31st October 2026

There are few better times to photograph the Northumberland coast than sunrise. Learn to predict the sun’s position, capture dawn’s changing colours, balance bright skies with darker landscapes, and create compelling compositions.
Depending on the time of year and conditions, locations might include Amble, Coquet Island, Warkworth, Bamburgh or Dunstanburgh Castle.
You’ll also discover why the best photographs aren’t necessarily taken at the exact moment the sun appears above the horizon.
Seashore Birds and Coastal Wildlife Photography
Thursday 5th November 2026

Northumberland’s coastline provides wonderful opportunities to photograph shorebirds, seabirds and other wildlife.
Learn to approach wildlife photography with patience, observation, and an understanding of bird behaviour. We’ll explore focus techniques, shutter speeds, exposure, backgrounds, and capturing movement, including birds in flight.
We’ll also look at how the tide influences where birds feed and how to position yourself to photograph them.
Wildlife welfare always comes first. You’ll learn techniques for photographing birds without disturbing them or interfering with their natural behaviour.
Sunrise Telephoto Seascape Photography
Date to be arranged in 2027

Combine sunrise photography, telephoto landscape, and seascape skills to capture unusual, stunning images.
To capture stunning images, we’ll explore the weather, tide, the sun’s position, depth of field, and shutter speed, and plan and execute carefully.
Sunset and Blue Hour Photography
Date to be arranged soon

Learn to make the most of the beautiful light at the end of the day.
We’ll explore exposure, silhouettes, colour and composition as the sun approaches the horizon. As daylight fades, you’ll discover the subtle blues and shifting tones that make blue hour so rewarding.
This workshop is particularly suitable for landscape, coastal and architectural photography.
Creative Composition – Making Stronger Photographs
Bookings coming soon: Saturday 14th November 2026

What makes one photograph stand out while another, taken from almost the same place, looks ordinary?
This workshop explores the art of seeing.
Learn how to use lines, shapes, patterns, negative space, balance, perspective, framing and visual relationships to produce stronger photographs.
We’ll also challenge some familiar photographic rules and discover when breaking them creates a better picture.
Suitable for almost any camera, and a particularly good choice for photographers who can control their focusing and exposure and want to develop their creativity.
Bookings for Saturday 14th November will be available soon. In the meantime, you can book this as a 1-2-1 session using the following button.
Night Photography and Light Painting
Date to be arranged 2027

Explore a different photographic world after sunset.
You’ll learn how to focus in darkness, control long exposures, use manual settings and capture scenes that your eyes cannot see in quite the same way.

Depending on conditions and location, we’ll experiment with photographing illuminated buildings, light trails, night landscapes and creative light painting using portable light sources.
Discover how a simple torch can transform an otherwise ordinary photograph into something atmospheric and unusual.
Long-Exposure Photography Using ND Filters
Date to be arranged in 2027

Discover how to photograph movement in ways the human eye cannot see.
You’ll learn how neutral density (ND) filters reduce the light entering your camera, letting you use much longer shutter speeds.
Experiment with turning moving seawater into a soft mist, smoothing ripples, recording cloud movement, and creating minimalist landscapes.
We’ll cover how to calculate exposures, choose filters, use a tripod, and avoid common long-exposure mistakes.
Woodland Photography – Finding Order in the Chaos
Date to be arranged in 2027

Woodlands are beautiful but can be surprisingly difficult to photograph. Even experienced photographers can find woodland photography challenging. However, they also offer excellent opportunities that many accomplished photographers overlook.
Learn to recognise the patterns, relationships, textures and colours that make woodland images successful.
We’ll explore how to simplify complex scenes, find interesting subjects, photograph in soft or misty light, and use depth of field and perspective to separate a composition’s key elements.
Particularly rewarding during spring and autumn, although woodland photography offers opportunities throughout the year.
Seascape Photography – Waves, Movement and Mood
Date to be arranged in 2027

Northumberland’s coastline is ideal for exploring how shutter speed interacts with moving water.
Learn when to freeze breaking waves, retain the sense of water flowing around rocks, or use slower shutter speeds for softer, more abstract effects.
We’ll cover tides, weather, exposure, composition, filters, and how to work safely around the sea.
Black and White Photography – Learning to See Differently
Date to be arranged in 2027
Removing colour from a photograph changes everything.

Learn to recognise subjects that work particularly well in monochrome and understand how light, contrast, texture, shape and tonal separation influence the finished image.
This workshop concentrates on seeing and photographing subjects with black-and-white images in mind, rather than simply converting colour photos afterwards.

Street Photography – Capturing Everyday Life
Date to be arranged in 2027
Discover how to turn everyday scenes into compelling photographs through observation, timing and creative composition.

Street photography is about noticing the extraordinary in the ordinary. From fleeting human interactions and interesting characters to architectural details, light and shadows, and unexpected moments, there are photographic opportunities wherever you look.

During this practical workshop, you’ll learn how to anticipate moments, use natural light, work with different focal lengths and compose photographs that tell a story. We’ll explore techniques for photographing discreetly and confidently.
We’ll also discuss the ethics of street photography, respecting people’s privacy and understanding the considerations involved in photographing people in public places.
Held in suitable North East locations, including Newcastle, these workshops will help you develop your observational skills, react more quickly, and create engaging images of everyday life.
Suitable for: Beginners, improvers and experienced photographers who want to develop their creativity, confidence and ability to recognise interesting photographic moments.

Close-Up and Macro Nature
Date to be arranged in 2027
Another world waits to be photographed among the flowers, leaves, rocks, and grasses.
Explore close-up composition, focus, depth of field, background control, and natural light.
Depending on the season and location, subjects might include flowers, fungi, lichens, textures, insects and other small creatures.
You don’t necessarily need a dedicated macro lens to start discovering the possibilities.

Abstract Photography and Intentional Camera Movement
Date to be arranged in 2027
Not every photograph needs to literally record what is in front of the camera.
Discover creative approaches using intentional camera movement (ICM), reflections, patterns, textures and unusual viewpoints.
Experiment with movement, shutter speeds and colour to produce impressionistic photographs that express a feeling rather than simply document a scene.
This workshop is ideal for photographers who want to break out of familiar habits and try something completely different.

Landscape Photography – Light, Depth and Perspective
Date to be arranged in 2027
Learn how to create landscape photographs that convey a sense of place.
We’ll cover planning, recognising good light, creating depth, choosing focal lengths, understanding perspective, focusing techniques and controlling exposure.
Northumberland offers a tremendous variety of landscapes, from beaches and historic castles to rolling farmland, hills and open countryside.

- Architectural and castle photography: Using perspective, light and geometry to photograph Northumberland’s historic buildings.
- Photographing movement and action: Improving panning techniques and learning when to freeze or deliberately blur movement.
- Creative use of filters: Understanding polarising, graduated ND and other photographic filters.

- Photographing patterns and textures: Finding fascinating abstract subjects in everyday surroundings.
- Focus and depth-of-field masterclass: Learning to control sharpness and background blur for different photographic subjects.
- Exposure and dynamic range: Tackling difficult lighting conditions, exposure compensation, histograms and bracketing.
- Seasonal photography: Spring flowers, summer evenings, autumn colours and dramatic winter landscapes.
- Surrealism: Explore surrealism in photography by combining unusual perspectives, creative techniques and unexpected subjects to produce imaginative, dreamlike images that challenge reality.

Where Do the Northumberland Photography Workshops Take Place?
My photography workshops are based in Northumberland, and I regularly teach around Amble, Warkworth, Alnwick, Hauxley, Druridge Bay, Boulmer, and the surrounding coastline. Some premium workshops will happen further afield in Newcastle, Edinburgh, and elsewhere.
Depending on the workshop and arrangements, other locations can include Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh Castle, Holy Island (Lindisfarne), the Cheviot Hills and other parts of Northumberland.
I don’t choose the location simply because it’s attractive. I consider the subject, time of day, light direction, weather, tidal conditions, and seasonal opportunities to give us the best chance of an enjoyable, productive shoot.
We’ll confirm final meeting arrangements before your workshop.

Who Are The Northumberland Photography Workshops For?
These sessions suit photographers of all experience levels.
Beginners can learn to understand their cameras, improve composition, and gain confidence shooting outside automatic mode.
Improvers can develop new techniques, tackle more challenging subjects and make more deliberate creative decisions.
Experienced photographers can explore unfamiliar subjects, refine particular skills and discover new locations and photographic possibilities.
The teaching is tailored to your experience, so you won’t be expected to understand techniques you haven’t encountered yet.

What Camera Equipment Will I Need?
Most workshops suit mirrorless or DSLR cameras from any manufacturer, including OM System/Olympus, Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, and Panasonic.
Equipment requirements depend on the subject. For example, a long lens is particularly useful for shorebirds, while a tripod is recommended for night photography, sunrise and long exposures. Some workshops require filters.
You won’t necessarily need expensive specialist equipment. I’ll explain what’s useful for your chosen workshop before you attend.

Independent customer reviews
Read feedback from photography students and workshop clients.
I’m a Northumberland-based professional photographer, experienced photography tutor, and photography writer, with articles published on internationally recognised photographic websites, including PetaPixel and Fstoppers.
I believe that photography teaching should be practical, enjoyable and understandable. Complicated camera settings become much easier when you can see how they affect the photographs you’re actually taking.
Rather than following a rigid lesson regardless of conditions, I adapt my teaching to your experience, the available light, the location and the photographic opportunities in front of us.
Whether you want to produce more interesting photographs, master an unfamiliar technique, or simply enjoy photography in Northumberland, I want you to leave with useful new skills and a better understanding of your camera.
You can also read independent customer reviews on Google, Trustpilot, Facebook and TripAdvisor.

Flexible Northumberland Photography Workshops Throughout the Year
The Northumberland Photography workshops last 1½ to 2 hours, though some subjects benefit from longer sessions.
I arrange dates to suit the light, tides, weather, and seasonal conditions. If you want a workshop but cannot make the date, please ask, and I’ll arrange another date, either as a group workshop or a one-to-one session.

You’re welcome to enquire about booking a separate workshop with a partner, friend or small group. Please contact me to arrange details and prices.
Some sessions may require walking over uneven terrain, and I can discuss suitable locations if you have mobility or accessibility requirements.
Visitors staying in Northumberland are welcome too. A photography workshop can be a rewarding addition to your holiday, giving you an opportunity to improve your skills while exploring the area.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I book just one photography workshop?
Yes. These are standalone sessions, so you can choose a single photographic subject without committing to a longer course.
The Northumberland Photography Workshops are group classes. Can I book these as 1-2-1 lessons instead?
Yes. Some people like learning alongside others, while others prefer solo lessons. You can book any of these as personal 1-2-1 workshops by clicking here.
Do I need to be an experienced photographer?
No. We can adapt workshops to your ability, though some advanced techniques are easier if you already understand the main camera controls.
Can I choose the date?
Dates are arranged according to availability. Sunrise, sunset, wildlife, and other location-dependent sessions must also account for daylight, weather, tides, and seasonal opportunities. I can, however, book new dates for one-to-one sessions or for you and a partner or a small group of friends.
What happens if the weather is unsuitable?
Photography can be rewarding in many different weather conditions. However, if conditions make a workshop unsafe or impractical, we’ll reschedule to an alternative date.

Can I book a workshop while visiting Northumberland?
Yes. I welcome visitors and holidaymakers, including people staying around Amble, Alnwick, Warkworth, Seahouses, Bamburgh and elsewhere in Northumberland. Please enquire early if your visiting dates are limited.
Can I bring a friend?
Yes. Please contact me to discuss additional participants and any applicable group pricing.
Do you offer photography gift vouchers?
Yes. A photography workshop makes a thoughtful gift for someone who enjoys taking pictures or wants to get more from their camera.
