This Northumberland-based Action and Creative Wildlife Photography Workshop is designed for individuals who want to improve their photography skills by capturing better images of birds and wildlife. You will focus on capturing images that showcase action and utilise creative effects.

Usually, this is delivered as one-to-one training, but I can run it for small groups, limited to a maximum of 4 people. It is exclusively booked for you or your party. If your dates are restricted, please check availability before booking.

What will the workshop cover?

The wildlife workshop includes camera settings, positioning yourself for birds on the ground and in flight, bird behaviour, photographic composition, and exposure. We will also examine how the tidal state, light, and wind direction impact your technique. You will have numerous opportunities to put these skills into practice. The workshop is usually held in and around Amble, then moving on to Druridge and/or Warkworth, depending upon the time of year.

Optional extras are also available, including workshops on and around the Farne Islands, a boat trip around Coquet Island, or workshops at hidden locations on the North Northumberland coast.

What will I need to take?

You will need a camera with a telephoto lens. 300mm or longer is ideal, but please speak with me if you don’t have that.

I will provide a full kit list when you sign up, but you won’t need much extra gear. However, you may need a packed lunch and drink if you’re booking a full-day trip.

Tides and sea states permitting, we can include a boat trip around Coquet Island as part of your workshop.

You can also choose this as a separate session in addition to the four-hour workshop.

Further north, there are fantastic coastal locations for birds and other wildlife, home to a diverse array of species at different times of year.

Notes on Wildlife Workshops

The purpose of the workshop is to equip you with the skills to photograph wildlife. Wild animals and birds are unpredictable, and there is no guarantee that we will see a particular species. I’ve sat in a bird hide for hours and barely seen anything, coming away with no good pictures. Other times, I’ve visited the same location, seen lots of amazing wildlife, and come away with some pleasing photos. However, no matter the willingness of the wildlife to show its face, you will learn the skills you need.

Workshop timing matters. Factors such as the time of day, weather, sea conditions, and time of year influence our success. I get up early in the morning, so we can arrange sunrise workshops, when many birds are most active.
